As a nonprofit board director myself, I understand that NPOs need to project their image professionally and to upskill in many areas. I have postgraduate business qualifications and 15 years experience in the NPO sector.

I have requalified as a Certified Fund Raising Executive, as one of only 15 in Queensland and 67 in Australia. This is an international qualification which requires significant commitment to fundraising, professional development and volunteering, and I am proud to have qualified for the second time. http://www.cfre.org/

A Focus on the Future

A nonprofit organisation which offers a complete range of giving options attracts more donor investors. Planned Giving is an important offering, especially given the greater awareness of philanthropy in Australia today, and the ageing of the population.

Organisational patience is required: a recognition that it takes time for a planned giving program to work.

A bequest brochure and Will clauses on the website do not automatically result in manna from heaven. Effective, proactive planned giving is the result of leadership support, planning, policies, teamwork, building effective working relationships with donors, their advisors and families, and integration with the programs of fundraising colleagues. Please call me to discuss how I can help plan and implement a planned giving program.

Volunteering

How great it is to be able to contribute to a nonprofit as a board member. I was able to secure for the Australian South Sea Islander Community Foundation a 6 year commitment of $5000 for scholarships from CSR Sugar to advance the careers of young Australian South Sea Islanders – a neglected community group which does not receive the benefits enjoyed - and deserved - by indigenous Australians. These funds will be invested in perpetuity with the Queensland Community Foundation and will grow to provide an everlasting legacy. As well, CSR donated 20 used but nearly new laptops to young Australian South Sea Islanders and responded to my request for in-kind support, leveraging their relationship with other companies in the sugar industry to secure further support. Mackay Sugar was pleased to donate the cost of developing a community website. This is the beginning of a deep and true partnership. Thank-you, CSR Sugar. Linkage, Ability Interest – all exist as the foundation of this relationship.

Three Plus Me

I have just finished a four month contract with Three Plus, a full service business and marketing communications consultancy, managing business development for Three Plus Training. Their reputation management series and Australian School of Journalism are excellent training programs for government, industry and individuals.

United Way Queensland

After four years on the Board of Directors of UWQ, I have resigned to concentrate on other volunteer efforts as well as my work. I encourage people who would like to volunteer doing administrative tasks or backyard blitzing the premises of a nonprofit organisation, to contact CEO, Marilyn Beamish, to discuss ways in which you can help. People with great corporate ability and contacts would be valued for the Board and those who are handy with painting, tidying or landscaping work are just as valued.
